Many dog owners generally think of clipping as just a process; few understand that clipping a dog is an art. Clipping a dog's coat or nails needs to be carried out in a careful manner to avoid injuries to the skin or nails. Clipping the coat should be taken care of per the breed's characteristics. If the dog's coat is not properly clipped, this could lead to dust accumulating in the coat and the animal may start showing signs of skin diseases. If you live in a winter region, avoid clipping the fur to close to the skin. Closer clipping in the winter may expose the dog to the environmental stresses like the cold climate. Thus, the dog may become more vulnerable to frostbite. This is especially true when the grooming activities are not done in a proper manner.
Clipping a dog's nail is especially important, if the nail becomes too long it will make it difficult for your pet to walk and will be extrememly uncomfortable and can cause pain and infections. Always make sure to use a sharp clipper and you musn't clip to close to the "quick" which is the vein, this will cause considerable pain and bleeding. A definite No No. It is best to take little snips off at a time. Here is a great video to show you how to properly clip your dog's nail: [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqc4OW_Iz9A]
If you are not comfortable clipping your pet, or trimming the nails have your Veterinarian do it or have it done at your local Groomer. Having an experienced person handle this is prefered to relieve stress on your pet and to have them enjoy the experience and not be frightened everytime it needs to be done.
